Insurance

Massachusetts law requires that all students who are enrolled for nine or more credit hours per semester be covered by health insurance. Health insurance covers most referrals, tests, procedures, and emergency care that cannot be performed at Health Services.

• A Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is available through the college.
• Students with comparable coverage through an outside family or individual plan may apply for a waiver from the college plan.
• Wentworth requires international students to be enrolled in the school plan (SHIP).
• The law does not recognize out of state Medicaid coverage as comparable insurance although enrollment in MassHealth qualifies for the waiver.
• All students are automatically enrolled and billed for the college plan (SHIP) at the beginning of the academic year. Students with alternative insurance must file a waiver on-line at www.university healthplans.com or through Student Financial Services at the beginning of the school year to avoid being charged for the college plan.

The health insurance plan offered by the college (SHIP) provides very basic coverage at a reasonable cost. Insurance through family coverage is usually adequate, although if the family plan is out of state, it is sometimes more difficult to get the out-of-state approvals necessary to get referrals covered.

Students should know whether they have school insurance or a family plan. If a student is covered by SHIP, Health Services knows the policy number for the students. However, if covered by a family plan, please be sure to:

• carry an insurance card,
• know under whose plan you're covered (mother, father, yourself),
• know the name of the plan,
• know the policy number of the plan, and the address.
