Dr. Robert Buxbaum Earns Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care from the American Board of Internal Medicine

Newton, MA - (March 4, 2009) - Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, a multi-specialty physician practice with offices across eastern Massachusetts and an affiliate of Atrius Health, is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Buxbaum has successfully earned his board certification in hospice and palliative care, a new subspecialty, from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Dr. Buxbaum has been board certified in internal medicine since 1963.

“Dr. Buxbaum has been a visionary, an educator and a leader of Harvard Vanguard’s efforts to achieve excellence in palliative and hospice care,” said Dr. Mark Yurkofsky, chief of palliative care and extended care for Harvard Vanguard. “He has also made major contributions to the field on a state as well as a national level.” Dr. Buxbaum co-founded the Massachusetts Compassionate Care Coalition in 1999, an organization that promotes informed choice, dignity and comfort at the end of life through community-based initiatives, for which he won the 2007 Mary Davis Barber Heart of Hospice Award.

Dr. Buxbaum has been a practicing internist at Harvard Vanguard since it was originally founded in 1969 as Harvard Community Health Plan. He is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and was recently elected to fellowship status in the Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
