Dr. Joseph Dorsey Earns Fellow in Hospital Medicine Designation

Newton, MA - (March 26, 2009) - Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, a multi-specialty physician practice with offices across eastern Massachusetts and an affiliate of Atrius Health, is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Dorsey has earned the Fellow in Hospital Medicine (FHM) designation from the Society of Hospital Medicine. The FHM designation is given to those who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues and the hospital medicine specialty.

Dr. Dorsey retired from Harvard Vanguard in June 2006 after a distinguished 40-year career. One of the original founders of Harvard Community Health Plan, Dr. Dorsey most recently was chief of Harvard Vanguard Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Prior to holding this position, he was corporate medical director and later senior vice president of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. He was then named president of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. Dr. Dorsey continues to serve Atrius Health as a community representative on the Atrius Health Board of Trustees.

To be designated as a Fellow in Hospital Medicine, an applicant must be a hospitalist for five years, a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine for three years, demonstrate their dedication to quality and process improvement, commitment to organizational teamwork and leadership, as well as lifelong learning and education.

Dr. Dorsey graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, received a Masters in Medical Science from Dartmouth College, his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and a Masters in Public Health from Yale University. He has been the recipient of several awards including the Massachusetts Health Council Annual Achievement Award (2006) and the Boston Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award (2006).

Approximately 500 hospitalists will be inducted in the inaugural class of Fellows this May at Hospital Medicine 2009 in Chicago, IL.
