Dr. Todd F. Holzman, of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates’ West Roxbury office, will receive the 2006 Bruno Lima Award for Excellence in Disaster Psychiatry for his work in assisting those affected by Hurricane Katrina. This national award will be presented to Dr. Holzman at the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society’s Annual Meeting on May 2, 2006 at Bentley College.
"It is a privilege for Harvard Vanguard to have such a talented physician as part of our team," said Dr. Richard Marshall, Chief Medical Officer at Harvard Vanguard. "Dr. Holzman’s psychiatric work in disaster relief is an example of the compassionate commitment to patient care that Harvard Vanguard physicians demonstrate everyday."
Dr. Holzman has over twenty years of experience in general psychiatry and has been a member of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS) since 1977. He helped found the MPS Disaster Readiness Committee in 1996 and currently serves as its co-chair. As a member of the American Red Cross, he was chair of Disaster Services from 1999 until 2003, and worked with family members of the victims of September 11th. Since 1994, he has been a member of the Disaster Mental Health committee of the Massachusetts Bay Chapter of the Red Cross.
The Bruno Lima Award for Excellence was established in 1996 to support professional values as well as encourage training among psychiatrists in the area of disaster psychiatry. Each year the award is given to one member who made outstanding contributions to the care and understanding of victims of disasters. Past winners include Dr. Frederick Stoddard and Dr. Ruth Barron, also of Massachusetts.
