Hand Therapy at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates

Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates Hand Therapy department is staffed by Occupational Therapists who are certified in Hand Therapy. Hand Therapists specialize in rehabilitating patients with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity (arm). We work with patients who may have been affected by an accident or trauma leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons or nerves, fractures, or even amputation of the finger, hand, or arm.

We also treat patients who are disabled from the effects of cumulative trauma disorders – such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome. Many patients seeking the care of a hand therapist also suffer from such chronic problems as arthritis or a neurological condition.

Common types of problems treated by Hand Therapists include:

  • Hand and wrist fractures
  • Lacerations
  • Tendon, ligament or nerve injuries
  • Scars, or contractures
  • Amputations
  • Arthritis
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Congenital Anomalies
  • Overuse injuries such as tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome
  • DeQuervain’s and trigger fingers

Hand evaluations can include assessments of the upper extremity(arm) in:

  • Range of motion
  • Strength and coordination
  • Sensation¨ Muscle tone
  • Function
  • Edema

Treatment techniques:

  • Therapeutic exercises to increase range of motion, strength, and coordination
  • Functional activity training, joint protection and work simplification
  • Static and dynamic splinting
  • Edema and scar management
  • Teaching ergonomics
  • Patient education
  • Use of modalities, such as ultrasound, iontophoresis, hot and cold modalities

Hand Therapy services are offered at the Kenmore location. To make an appointment individuals will need a referral from a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Patients are seen by scheduled appointment only. Appointments are available Monday through Friday.
