Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates is pleased to be able to provide its patients with two, convenient, state-of-the-art Endoscopy Departments: one at our Kenmore Square (Boston) practice location, and Atrius Health Endoscopy Center in Weymouth, MA, through our affiliation with Atrius Health. For contact information, click "Locations" on the left.
Both facilities can provide the following gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures:
A colonoscopy is an examination of the colon (large intestine). This is accomplished using a camera at the end of a long tube that is inserted into the rectum and then advanced by the physician through the colon. Colonoscopy is considered the procedure of choice for colon cancer screening and, if necessary, for removing any unwanted polyps (a precancerous growth).
Although the procedure is generally the same as a colonoscopy, a sigmoidoscopy only examines the last third of the colon, known as the sigmoid or descending colon, and the rectum.
An upper gastrointestinal (UGI) Endoscopy is an examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract. This is accomplished using a thin flexible tube called an endoscope which has a tiny, optically sensitive computer chip at the end. The video endoscope is inserted through the mouth and then advanced by the physician into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
Our procedure rooms are equipped with state-of-the art equipment to ensure patient safety. Our staff is dedicated to the highest standards of patient care. The facilities offer an inviting reception area for patients and their families as well as recovery rooms that are designed for comfort and privacy.
