  • Has group classes and home-based program options

The program* offers an easy-to-follow diet that emphasizes healthy eating habits and fast, long-lasting weight loss – no gimmicks or fads. The delicious highly nutritious, portion controlled shakes, entrees, pudding, soup, nutrition bars, and multigrain hot cereal provide dieters with structure and minimize decisions about food choices.

The HMR Program at Harvard Vanguard is open to the public. All are welcome.

HMR Program Options

  • Clinic-based option - The clinic-based program provides the highest level of support and offers medical supervision if required. Participants attend weekly group classes at the Kenmore or Chelmsford practices where they learn strategies for lowering fat and calorie intake, and how to incorporate physical activity and more fruits and vegetables into their daily routine. Participants keep simple records and create weekly goals and learn to manage their weight within a structure of personal accountability. A Harvard Vanguard health educator leads all group meetings and is available via phone and e-mail for one-on-one support. After the weight-loss phase, participants attend weekly group classes where they continue to receive support while practicing simple strategies for successful long-term weight management.
  • Home-based option - For participants who travel often, require more flexibility, and do not require medical supervision, there is a home-based diet option with meals and structured meal plans. HMR at Home offers two do-it-yourself weight-loss kits, each with a complete collection of HMR diet foods, weight-loss tools, and tips.

Free Orientation

For anyone who wants to learn more about the program, HMR Orientation Sessions at Harvard Vanguard are free and open to the public. A schedule of sessions can be obtained by calling:

  • Chelmsford: 978-250-6210
  • Kenmore: 617-421-6018

Maintenance Phase

After the weight loss phase, participants attend weekly classes where they continue to receive individual and group support while learning additional, simple strategies for successful long-term weight management.

HMR Risk Factor Profile

The HMR Risk Factor Profile (a health risk appraisal) may be given to certain participants before and after weight loss. The profile illustrates improvements in medical risk factors as a result of weight loss and lifestyle changes, helping to reinforce newly acquired health habits.

* The HMR Program is not typically covered by health insurance. This program is recommended for adults only.
