Managing Your Wellness
If you have not already done so, we encourage you to select a primary care physician and schedule a visit. Our primary care physicians like to meet their new patients in person — this gives them a chance to get to know you and your medical history.
Together you and your primary care physician can begin building a relationship to support your good health. Your primary care physician, working with a team of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and others, will handle your regular checkups, provide care when you are sick, help coordinate your specialty medical care and look after your overall health.
Specialty Care
In most cases your primary care team will provide you with the health services you need. But there may be times when you need to see a specialist. We offer more than 35 medical and surgical specialties to meet your health care needs.
We recommend that you discuss your need for specialty care with your primary care physician. He or she will be able to recommend some specialists to you and can follow up with your specialist to help coordinate your care.
At Harvard Vanguard, your primary care team and specialists consult with each other — and with you — to determine how each treatment and health care decision will affect your overall health. This kind of careful coordination results in better, more personalized care for you.

You do not need a referral to make an appointment with any of our obstetrics and gynecology clinicians. For more information or assistance in selecting an Ob/Gyn clinician, please contact our patient relations department.
Urgent Care After Hours
What if a sudden illness occurs "after hours"? Many Harvard Vanguard offices offer urgent care appointments during the evenings and weekends. And nurses are available 24 hours a day to help you with your urgent medical questions and provide clinical advice over the phone.
To make an appointment for urgent care or to speak with a nurse about an urgent medical concern, call your doctor's office.
Emergency Care
Should you have acute medical needs, we encourage you to seek care either with your primary care provider or in urgent care.
This will ensure continuity of care, timely service, and decreased cost to you as most insurance plans require a much higher co-pay for emergency room care unless you are admitted.
In the event of a serious medical emergency, we encourage you to seek immediate care from the closest facility available. Be sure to contact your primary care physician as soon as possible, so that he/she can assist in your recovery. And also review review your insurance coverage so you will know their guidelines for emergency care coverage.
